Bed bugs have become a pest concern of near epic proportions in recent years. The largest metro areas have seen the greatest impact of these parasitic pests but no geographical area or dwelling is immune. Contrary to some beliefs, bed bugs are not associated with unkempt homes or dirty living conditions. They can come into any home on clothing, luggage, or even furniture that has been previously exposed to an infested dwelling. Bed bugs are often found in homes, apartments, dorms, hotels, and anywhere else people may sleep but have also been found in retail shops and manufacturing facilities where textiles are sold or made.
Bed bugs are parasites which means they feed on human blood. Like any other wild critter, they follow food sources. This means they will migrate between shared dwellings in search of food and will adapt to their hosts’ sleeping habits. Bed bugs are nocturnal, but will feed during the day if necessary. They typically feed at night and wait in the crevices of mattresses, bedding, bed frames, baseboards, or even nearby furniture.
Bed bugs are tiny but are clearly visible to the naked eye. They are also sneaky critters and it may be several days before anyone realizes they are there. Their bite is painless and because they feed while their host sleeps, most people don’t realize they’ve been bitten until they notice the tiny red welt and begin to itch. Other signs of the presence of bed bugs include tiny blood stains on bedding, brown or black specks on and in crevices of mattresses and on walls along baseboards.
If you suspect bed bug activity, do a visual inspection of the room in question. Thoroughly examine bedding, wall hangings, baseboards, and furniture and be on the lookout for both bed bugs and their offspring. The eggs are tiny white specks while nymphs can be white to pale yellow. Both are visible to the naked eye but may not show up well against light-colored backgrounds. If you see any adult bed bugs which are reddish-brown in color, collect it in a zip lock bag for proper identification.
The presence of bed bugs does not necessarily indicate an infestation that is out of control but if left untreated, it can quickly become so. Bed bugs have a life expectancy of anywhere from nine to 18 months and females can lay as many as 200 eggs in that time. Females lay between one and five eggs after every meal and can go four to six months between feedings. Leaving a bed bug situation untreated can very quickly become a problem.
Bed bugs are bad news indeed but the good news is they can be exterminated. There is a range of do-it-yourself pesticides to treat bed bugs and if caught and treated early, the situation can quickly be brought under control. Chemical treatment is the quickest and most effective method of treating bed bugs but if you prefer not to use chemicals, you can use a steamer to kill them. Bed bugs cannot survive high heat so wash everything you can in hot water, dry on high heat, and apply steam to the surface of everything else.
If you are unable to eliminate the problem without the use of pesticides, you can either check with a pest control company about other non-chemical treatment options or resign yourself to the use of chemicals. There is a variety of products available for exterminating bed bugs, ranging from sprays to dusts, which kill not only adult bed bugs but also those in various stages of development.
For situations that have already gotten out of control, it may be best to contact a professional exterminator. If you live in an apartment or other multi-unit dwelling, it will be necessary for every unit to be treated for extermination to be effective. Treating your own unit without the simultaneous treatment of others may kill the bugs or drive them away from your dwelling but they will return from neighboring units in time.
While chemical pesticides are a recommendation for bed bug treatment, they are not necessarily a prophylactic measure. If you want to monitor for bed bugs, look for monitoring traps that can be placed under the legs of bed frames and other furniture. Remember, regular inspection and early confirmation of suspected bed bug activity is the best way to keep a small problem from becoming a big one.
