Murphy patented his idea in 1900 and put it into production. People heard about the Murphy bed and decided to take advantage of their space-saving qualities. In 1906, the San Francisco earthquake occurred and Murphy beds became still more popular.
Because of the earthquake, many parts of the city had been severely damaged. Livable space in San Francisco was at a premium, and Murphy’s business prospered as people made the most of what little space there was.
Murphy beds grew in popularity all around the country. People were moving into cities and apartments in increasing numbers and the beds became trendy. Murphy moved his factory to New York in the 1920s. It’s still there producing beds. Many of the original Murphy beds are still in use.
Murphy beds can now be found all over the world. They are found in hotels, hospitals, fire stations, offices, just about anywhere that efficient use of space is a priority.
