Furnished Apartments – A Logical Alternative

January 12th, 2010

If you are one of the millions of people who need to move frequently, perhaps looking at furnished apartments might be your best bet! Unfortunately, many people tend to shy away from these because they do tend to cost considerably more than regular apartments, however, in many cases it’s actually much more affordable choice.

A common scenario is the business person who has never quite settled down. He is transferred almost annually and the stress of packing a huge household is not worth the effort. He found out early on that it’s easier to pack a few suitcases and simply move into his new furnished quarters, unencumbered with hundreds of boxes that most probably will never be unpacked anyway.

When you do rent a furnished apartment (whether it be short term rental or longer term), you usually have two separate contracts / agreements. One of course is with your apartment owner, and the second one is with the company from which you are renting the furniture. Depending on the arrangement the apartment owner has with the rental company will depend on whether you have your own contract with the furniture leasing company.

Choosing this type of apartment means you could possibly have two separate contracts, which is ideally what you should have. Having your own contract for the furniture is terrific because you can choose what you want, make changes every so often (Want a new couch? Just ask!), and never need to watch your furniture get old and warn out – while you’re still paying for it!

Depending on what personal or household items you have, or don’t have, will have a lot of bearing on what it is you end up renting along with your apartment. Do you just need furniture? What about a desk or office setup? Do you have towels? Silverware? Pots and pans?

Many single business executives find it easier to own nothing except their personal items like clothes or perhaps family photos, etc., and when it comes time for that next transfer they can pack everything in a day, have it shipped, and move in day is a snap. No mountains of boxes to go through. AND new furniture!

Certain areas of the country differ in what they determine to be ordinary items to be included in any rental. For instance, in Boston you will always get a refrigerator with any rental. Not so in cities like Miami or Seattle. So if you are researching furnished rentals, ask about appliances. You might even find out you will have a washer and dryer as well. Just don’t make assumptions.

If you are looking into apartments in new areas, and doing it online, you will probably be able to see photos of some rental units with samples of the furniture available. If you like what you see, ask if they can send you catalogs of what items you can choose from so you can plan well ahead. Also check to see when the furniture will be delivered; it’s not always the day you move in.
