The flying car, besides being an automobile is also an aircraft. This type of car can be used as a means of transportation but not on the roads.
The first flying car in history was designed and created by Glenn Curtis but this car wasn’t actually able to fly but just hop. The one that created the car that could actually fly was Waldo Waterman. The car was produced back in 1937 when it also took its first flight.
People started to imagine after World War II that the next means of transportation in the 21st century will be the flying car. The descriptions of these types of cars that date back in those days seem taken from a sci-fi novel. Various companies and persons made several attempts in order to create such cars and at some point to take them to mass production.
One of the top manufacturers in the car industry wanted to create flying cars and so it condoned a study to be made in order to decide if it was feasible to build such a car. They realized after some extensive research that they had both the technical means and the financial support to create the flying car. But another issue had to be solved in order to go ahead with the project, namely the regulatory issues.
What they soon discovered was that building this car would actually be the easy part because the legislatory measures that had to be implemented were a lot more difficult to deal with. Some of the things that were needed involved: air traffic control, laws and regulations regarding the altitude that you could fly at, the monitorization of those that didn’t have a license to fly but had a driving license and so on. For all these reasons, the project was put on hold.
